Ascent Trip Report

We started at the Kennesaw Mountain summit, and traveled SW downhill across a gradual saddle, then back up a slight grade to the sumnit of Little Kennesaw Mountain. The trail from Big Kennesaw over to Little Kennesaw is much less populated, even in mid-day. Also, the trail become much more interesting, as it is less groomed, and strewn with large to huge boulders. There are several cannons here as well, and a marker for the old Fort McBride. A slight sidetrack trail along the ridgeline brought us to a large boulder called "French's Rock" that gave a few photo ops. As we moved on downhill toward Pigeon Hill the trail is sometimes just a foot path tip toeing between the large boulders, with lots of opportunities to climb up on the rocks. As we finally descended to Pigeon Hill the terrain becomes less steep, and the hardwoods give way to the pines and you feel as though you are back in the cooler pine backwoods, and less like the rocky mountain you just left behind.
