Ascent of Mount Hood on 2013-12-29Date: | Sunday, December 29, 2013 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Mount Hood | Location: | USA-Oregon | Elevation: | 11239 ft / 3425 m |
Ascent Trip ReportTake shallow snow valley from the parking lot to the Snowcat-plowed road up to the Silcox Warming Hut. Then traverse up the right side of Palmer ski lift. Crampons on from the car to summit. Old Chute was messy slush by 2:ooPM so aim for the Old Chute by noon. Pearly Gates (I'm told) had a 10ft vertical ice section which was tricky and hard to protect. Two tools up the Old Chute would have been REALLY nice. Too icy for pickets or wands. No noticeable crevasse danger. We brought rope but didn't rope up.
Essential gear: helmet, ice axe, steel crampons (don’t think those aluminums will cut it) Recommended extra gear: 2nd ice tool, goggles, Alti Mitts, summit jacket Non-essential gear: crevasse gear Useless gear: snowshoes, pickets, wands, shovel, probe
