Ascent Trip ReportBased on other trip reports, I was expecting crowds. I discovered how to avoid the crowds: go on a Wednesday on December. We had Sugarloaf to ourselves and only saw one solo hiker on the Mt Erie trail. The weather was pleasant, mostly cloudy with some sun, and 2 or 3 light rain/snow showers that lasted less than 5 minutes. The trail system is quite complex, so Google the map and print it up before you go. We took the following sequence from Heart Lake Rd at the trailhead at the junction with Mt Erie Rd: 215, 226, 238, 228, 215, Mt Erie Rd, 26, 216, summit, back down 216, 207, 230, 226, 21, 320, & 215. After the hike, we headed to Deception pass state park since we have never been. It is worth checking out of you are in the area. It was Aidan's first hike in Washington, and with the cold weather, and light bursts of precipitation, it was a perfect introduction to the PNW. This was also my first hike since returning home to Washington on Monday. It's great to be back after 9 months away.
