Ascent Trip Report

With Kath Giel. Stayed the night before at the Hacienda at Fort Hunter Liggett. Amazing - get the Q room. Started at 8am, temperature around 50 degrees. Bad to say, but thank god for the fire a couple of years ago! Without it, brush would have been impossible. Even today the entire trail needs some major work cutting bushes and removing poison oak.

First 1.5 miles of the trail was somewhat flat, then headed up. Next 1 mile poison oak and brambles. Then switchbacks that went on and on at a high angle. Need to catch breath many time. Lots of brushes that grabbed our clothing. After the switchbacks, mostly a narrow to moderate ridge line trail. Trail was rocky and scree in many places. The trail is almost all up with the only somewhat flat part being the first mile or so.

Hiking poles helped lots. On the ridge trail, snow was in places including the entire trail with a some small patches of ice. The ridge trail eventually lead to the summit with a old lookout tower on it. Floor of tower was unsafe as was walking around the tower.

Hike down was much better. Hike up was almost 5.5 house with down being 3 hours.
