Ascent Trip Report

This was my second ever peak bag - before I did trail reports. This is my best recollection. We parked at the Gould Rd parking lot off West Road off Rt 8 in Adams. The trail head started up immediately and we were harangued the first 500 to 1000 vertical feet by black flies. The trail was well worn. Near the top you cross over the memorial highway that leads to the top. The otherside of the highway the trail gets more aggressive and you climb over the small to medium sized boulders of a streambed or water channel.

I only remember two things about the summit. First, there were alot of people up there because of the highway to to the top. Most of them were picnicking on the east side of the summit past a large memorial obelisk. As we approached them an expansive vista of the valley containing Adams, MA opened up with much smaller hills (maybe mountains) in the distance. This view is quite impressive, not because of the stunning scenery, but because Adams seems so close.

Second, there was a young woman hiding behind the low walls surrounding the memorial obelisk. She was hiding from the wind and trying to light a backpacking stove. She had full backpack and kit with her was obviously an AT hiker (although I didn't know this at the time). Imagining her story, she must have been a southbounder. She was probably section-hiking through Massachusetts. As a February start on Katahdin is highly unlikely.

We ate lunch, took a couple of pictures that did not survive, and headed back the way we came up.
