Ascent Trip ReportPart of a wintery double peak adventure with a buddy from Huntsville, Alabama.
Rich Mountain isn't far from Big Bald and is pretty easily accessible from the wilderness road off of Rock Creek. After hitting Big Bald, we continued west along the ridge and found the road in the first of two clearings. The road drops you a little bit off to the southern side of the ridge and got us out of the wind for a while.
There is a little turnaround at the col preceding Rich Mountain, so we decided that it was a good place to dive back into the woods. We wandered up the eastern side of Rich, which is the most gradual slope. Be warned about doing this during the summer though, it was literally a half mile of briers. Our only saving grace was the winter frost sticking to the undergrowth and the brittle foliage easily giving way.
We stopped for a few minutes at the stone chimney on the summit and then quickly headed down the much steeper north side to get back to the road. We decided to skip the bushwhack on the way back and plodded down the road until getting back to Rock Creek Road. A Ford Explorer passed us while we were out on the wilderness road, so it is definitely doable if you've got a decent vehicle.
