Ascent of Sugarloaf Mountain on 2013-10-28
|Date:||Monday, October 28, 2013|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||11051 ft / 3368 m|
Ascent Trip ReportDeparted the Alta's upper parking lot near the snowcats at about 1030. Lots of fresh early-season snow, maybe 6 inches at Alta's base, and still snowing! followed the main road that leads to the parking lot for Catherine's Pass, I took a left early on to cross under the Sunnyside chair lift towards the Sugarload lift base. From there I kicked through the deeper snow along the main ski runs. High winds and more snow (3-5 ft at deepest sections) from here to the summit. Temperature dropped to 15-20F, less than 10F from the ridge to the summit. Still very windy. No visible trail from top terminal to summit, stayed clear of rock fields and windblown snow for best possible route to summit. Summit reached at 1250, STRONG residual winds and occasional white-out from storm below moving up the peak from the SW. Blazed trail on the descent since my tracks were now blown away or covered in fresh snow. Only a few other hikers that I saw skiing off High Rustler. GREAT day for some early season winter mountaineering! Returned to truck at 1500.
