Ascent Trip Report

There are at least 20 NC mountains named "Laurel". On this trip I climbed two of them on opposite sides of the Green Knob lookout tower.

For Laurel Knob, start at the Green Knob Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway and head south on the Snooks Nose trail, descending 560 feet in the first 0.7 miles and then almost level for the next 0.4 miles. The trail bypasses the summit of Laurel Knob, leaving a 100-yard bushwhack that is as wicked as it is short. Not only is the laurel thick and tangled, but it is interlaced with briars. The top is mostly an 8-foot-high heath bald with only a few scrub trees. There is one small rocky clearing with nice western views just a few yards from the summit.

After returning to my car, I drove northbound on the Parkway about 3 miles to Forest Service Road 2074, where I hiked to Big Laurel Mountain.
