Ascent Trip Report

A very nice fall day on the Des Centannaires trail; finally had the opportunity to hike it in the proper direction, ie. start with the fairly steep ascent of the Montagne de la Vache Noire, then descend into the trough separating it from the northern sub-summit, go up that, and then take the path descending to La Sablonniere. Since this is a traverse, the full duration was about 4.5-5 hrs.
The first ascent is some good cardio workout on a bouldery, twisting path, with several viewpoints that make one feel the 'mountain high'. Later on, there is a lot of straightforward hiking in largely treed terrain, not as spectacular as the firt 2km. Another nice viewpoint exists on the north sub-summit. Fall colours were in full effect, maybe almost too late in fact. The day began as cool but turned into almost summer weather by afternoon. My hiking buddy was visiting from Alberta; this is our 2nd mountain this year, first one being in the AB Rockies...a good perspective comparing these two very different ranges.
