Ascent Trip Report

The summit of Blackrock Mountain is on the Tennessee Rock trail, a 2.2-mile loop in Blackrock Mountain State Park. Arriving late in the day, I found a shortcut that's about a mile round trip.

Park at the Visitors Center ($5) and follow the paved road as it continues north and climbs counterclockwise around a knob. After 0.2 miles, you'll see a sign on the left, "Eastern Continental Divide, Elevation 3571". On the right is a wooden fence that separates the Tennessee Rock Trail from the road. Make your way around the fence and follow the trail 0.3 miles along the ridge, with little climbing. The summit is marked by an engraved stone that says "Black Rock Mountain, Summit Elev. 3640, 1988 USGS, GA DNR." I presume that is a newly surveyed height, which corresponds with the small 3640 contour on the quad.

A short distance before you reach the summit is the Tennessee Rock overlook, where a clear day includes views of the TN HP Clingman's Dome as well as the GA HP Brasstown Bald.

You pass the Tennessee Rock trailhead on the drive upy to the visitor's center. If you hiked out-and-back from there, it would be about 2.4 miles round trip with 400 feet of climbing.

The spellings "Blackrock" and "Black Rock" seem to be used interchangeably.

When I was a boy, my family camped at Blackrock Mountain (my father burned out the transmission in his 1960 Ford station wagon pulling a trailer up to the campground). I have vivid memories of climbing out on a lichen-covered rock, only to discover that it was too slippery for me to back up. I could hold my ground, but whenever I tried to move, I would start to slip. I couldn't see over the edge and didn't know how high it was. Finally, all I could do was pray and yield to gravity. God put a pile of leaves about six feet below the ledge, and I landed safely. Ever since then, I beware of lichen.
