Ascent Trip Report

This was a repeat hike for me but two new county high points for Charlie Zerphey, who now has 81 of the 88 COHPs along the AT. Charlie, 83, is working on the hiking equivalent of a golfer shooting his age, and is aiming to finish this list next year.

The hike remains simple--two miles roundtrip on the AT northbound to reach the White and Habersham COHPs (Habersham is about 200 yards north of the summit of Tray Mountain.) There are two benchmarks (as well as a reference mark) on the summit outcropping, US Geological Survey 1934 and US Geodetic Survey 1975 1983.

ACCESS NOTE: Tray Mountain Road has deteriorated over the past two years and may not be passable in some cars. We had no problem in a 4WD Ford Escape. We came up Tray Mountain Road from GA 75. (Tray Mountain Road is unsigned, but look for a small sign for Bison View Lodge two miles north of the town of Helen.) The 6-mile approach is bumpy but OK, but past the junction with Indian Grave Road, it is washed out in places and partially blocked by a large fallen tree that we were able to drive around. We descended on Indian Grave Road, which is fine except that you must ford a wide creek near the junction with GA 75. I wouldn't try that without high clearance and 4WD.
