Ascent Trip ReportBlood Mountain took a little more sweat than we expected. There's no parking for hikers at Neels Gap. Instead, the trailhead is 200 feet further down the north side of the mountain at the Byron Reese Memorial.
The Byron Reese access trail is 0.7 miles and reaches the AT at Flatrock Gap (3400). Turn right and head southbound on the AT up the steep east side of Blood Mountain. The trail is well-built but the rock steps are relentless until you get above 4000 feet. Then after a flat stretch, you get your rewards as the trail climbs a series of bald rocks with views all the way to Atlanta.
Round trip 4.2 miles with a climb of 1440 feet. It took us 1:50 up and 1:20 down. There's an NGS reference mark, Blood 1975, set deep in the summit stone.
This was my 13th COHP in Georgia and 118th overall.
