Ascent Trip ReportFull Trip Summary: The parking lot was located at intersection of NH-171 and Sodom Rd. next to Fields Brook. There was no trailhead marked but it clearing looks like a trail head. I took the Mt. Shaw Trail (Red Trail) which follows Fields Brook most of the way up. This meets up with Black Snout Trail and you can follow this to summit. Mt. Shaw offers some spectacular views of both the Ossipee Range and towards the White Mountains! Enjoyed lunch and met a nice woman who summed up Mt. Shaw perfectly by saying that it offered "the big mountain feel much closer than the Whites" to which I couldn't agree more. On the return trip I decided to head over Black Snout and Big Ball (Tate) Mtn. The trail to Black Snout is wide carriage trial and easy to follow, Black Snout offers some great views over the lakes region. You can see Gunstock Mtn. and the fire tower on Piper Mtn. across the lakes. Finding the Banana Trail to Big Ball (Tate) Mtn. proved a bit difficult. On Black Snout Trail, from the first real lookout over the lakes region right before trail loops back towards summit is a little cairn. Here you can see a unmarked wooden sign (presumably used to have trail name) and a red flyer hanging from a branch. The trail is almost indiscernible with the exception of some bent grass. Luckily the hanging red flyers guide you for about a tenth of a mile and then the trail becomes normal footpath. The Banana Trail was a bit rough, lots of things blocking trail and the blue blazes are very faded. Once you get to Big Ball (Tate) Mtn. though you are rewarded with yet another beautiful view over the lakes region. You also get a good view back towards Black Snout. From here I took Tate Mtn. Trail back down to Fields Brook and parking lot. Great day hike, with some great views! Start: 9:30am, Finish 1:30pm (w/ 30 minute lunch break on Shaw), 7.3 miles.
