To take the most direct route to Burnt Mt. I started from the Cougar Pass trail head at Daley Ranch and headed up cougar ridge trail past engelmann oak trail junction 1, bobcat trail junction 1 and 2, then turned left at engelmann oak trail junction 2. Continued about 0.5 mile to the summit use trail on the left at coordinates 33.20128, -117.06478. At the beginning of the use trail just beyond an old concrete post footing there is a number of conspicuous yuccas, so you have to go right through them and then the trail reappears. Follow this ducked trail carefully as it winds steeply up through the brush and boulders, traversing at times, scrambling over slabs too, until upon reaching the top where you are rewarded with 3 summit cairns, a summit register, and 3 intact benchmarks, along with the great view! Summit register hadn't been signed in 4 months. On the main trail I took the same route back since it was very hot, 90+, but you could loop around back on the engelmann loop trail with an extra mile.
