Ascent Trip ReportFrom the York Pond Road trailhead, I took the York Pond/Bunnel Notch Trails 3 miles to the junction with the Kilkenny Ridge Trail. Then I followed the Kilkenny Ridge Trail south along the ridge crest, traversing the Terrace and Weeks ranges (there is a 0.1 mile spur path to the summit of South Terrace). Once I reached South Weeks, I backtracked along the Kilkenny Ridge Trail toward the north until I met up with the York Pond Trail, which I followed downhill toward my starting point. The total distance was about 16 miles.
The Bunnell Notch Trail is well-traveled as it is the standard route to Mt. Cabot, but the other trails get much less use, especially the section of the Kilkenny Ridge Trail that I traveled today. It is thread-like singletrack most of the way, with occasional blowdowns to go around, or crawl over or under. There were also some places, mainly on the north side of Middle Weeks, where other paths branched off, and I had to be careful to stay on course. Usually it is easy to avoid random side trails, but if the main trail is lightly used, it can be difficult to tell the main trail apart from the side trails. Nevertheless, the Weeks/Terrace section of the Kilkenny Ridge Trail, while lacking in views, is quite an enjoyable woods walk. It provides a feeling of remoteness, and I only saw one other party along the entire Kilkenny Ridge section that I covered today.
