Ascent Trip ReportI printed out beta on this one over a year ago. I have no idea why I selected the route I did. I'm also not sure why I didn't have Edward's report stapled in with the maps. He covered it in detail.
I was just passing through Oregon and wanted to drive up. I did. But gather round, children, and let me learn you a little something about Mt. Emily. Do NOT take Mt. Emily "Road" up the south face. Unless you want to hike like Edward did. Or unless you take pleasure in the jarring of bones.
To drive up the road I drove you will need a bit of gumption. High clearance is mandatory. Period. As the road goes narrow past the last residences, it is signed as a jeep road. It is that, at best. Don't take a vehicle whose paint job matters to you - I scraped some overgrown shrubs here and there, especially in the narrow exposed sections. 4 wheel drive is important in several sections. Good tires are a must - street tires are going to be a severe liability... I hope you just blow one. Hell, I was even pretty happy to have the torque of a V6.
I and my truck made it in one piece, but it's one of the tougher roads I've driven. It's not even that hard I guess - just close your eyes and slam into the rock ledges and boulders and deep deep ruts because there's no getting around them. I felt like I was in a Jeep commercial. I never contemplated turning around, but I did know that if things got ANY worse I would face a tough decision.
I drove to the towers. At the summit I pulled out the trusty DeLorme and found another - any other - way down. The road that approached the summit from the north, off of the Mt. Emily Summit Road (31, I think), is doable with a passenger car. I turned right (north - the opposite direction from which I came) back at the approach road from the summit spur and then left onto 31. 31 is washboardy in places, but it's fine. A few turnoffs here and there, but the road down was fairly obvious.
Take the exit from I-84 signed Mt. Emily Summit Road, and maybe a waypoint of the turn south toward the summit spur - I don't think there was a sign. Don't bother trying anything from LaGrande.
