Ascent Trip Report

There are two Wolf Rocks in state parks in northwestern NC, and since there is only 17 feet difference in elevation, they are easily confused. This one at Stone Mountain State Park. The other is at Hanging Rock State Park.

The Wolf Rock Trail leads to a series of open rock faces that give you dramatic views of the 500-foot-high western face of Stone Mountain--which is particularly nice in the evening sun. The trail does not go all the way to the wooded summit, however. Peakbaggers can follow the trail about one mile, climbing easily to 1940 feet. Then the trail levels out and eventually descends on its way to the overlooks. From this point, bushwhack to the HP, which is relatively level but made challenging by lots of blown-down trees.

The round trip is 3 miles to the end of the trail, though the summit can be reached in 2.5 roundtrip.
