Ascent Trip ReportAfter Ile du Cap aux Meules we moved east to Ile du Havre aux Maisons for more sight-seeing/climbing.
From the information Center at the wharf in Cap aux Meules we drove east on #199, over the Havre bridge, 4.9km to a right turn on Chemin de la Pointe-Basse, 2.4km east on the left is Chemin des Buttes that leads north to the Buttes Pelees and in another .6km east on the right is the parking "L'echoverie de la Pointe-Basse Cap Alright, Cultural Site #7" with Butte Ronde (to the northwest) dominating this corner of the Island.
BUTTE RONDE ..... a scramble up the south side, 800M 35 minutes RT.
All open grasslands conical mountain offering an outstanding 360 degree panorama. From the Cap Alright parking I crossed the road and found-my-way/zig-zagged/scrambled .4km northerly up the very-steep/south-side-slope to the summit. Mostly grassland with loose rock stretches.
The summit is topped with a illuminated Large Cross, my GPS 47.39484,-61.77535.
BUTTES PELEES - OUEST .... grasland climb, 800M 40 minutes RT.
We traveled north on Chemin des Buttes 1.2km to a worked quarry on the right (no one around on this day). We parked at the entrance, this was my TH.
To my surprise I found that the Buttes Pelees summit, shown on the goggle maps with a Benchmark, was completely mined out, non existent .... its now just a large open quarry. I decided to climb the summit to its north.
The mountain and the whole area is all grasslands. I found my way north 150M on the west side of the quarry to the grass at bottom of the mountain, then zig-zagged steeply northeast 250M to the N-S summit ridge ..... about 50M long with a bump at each end having a similar elevation. I chose the north bump as my HP at 47.40572,-61.77814.
We drove back to Cap aux Meules, looked after a number of errands (banking, groceries, laundry) followed by well deserved lobster dinner, before going back to our campsite at Le Gros Cap.
A long but very enjoyable/super day to three Islands with little driving.
We loved our first day on Isles-de-la-Madeleine and really looking forward to tomorrow's trip Ile d'Entree, the COHP .... not the case with Rose, she doesn't see it as a safe trip and is all worried. !?!?!?!?!. The Ivan Quinn Ferry leaves at 7h30.
