Ascent Trip Report

San Bernardino/East Bernardino/Anderson

Hiking OC organized by Lily. Was one of those confusing shuttle hikes. The plan was to park some cars at Forsee creek and then start from San Bernardino trailhead in Angelus Oaks. The slow hikers were to start first, but some of the people in that group were actually pretty fast (faster than me for sure). They had started up by the time we got back from Forsee. People were taking time so Christian, Gerry and I started a little before the others. Christian is very fast and he knew the trail unlike most of the folks in the first group so he went ahead to catch up. Gerry and I have about the same pace so we stuck somewhat together.

Nice trail surface going up. It was all soft dirt and not much rocky which I love since I wear the trail runners. Lots of shade in the lower portion and then great views as it opened up in Manzanita flat. It is a pretty steady grade throughout. Not too strenuous but keeps going on.

Stopped at Washington Monument and met a group of land surveyors there. They shared some interesting tidbits about how the monument was used as reference point for surveys, Baseline road being a straight line radiating from the monument, and the remains of the magnesium fires that were lit on the 150th anniversary. Very cool. From here the San Bernardino peak is less than a mile and quick scramble to the top from the main trail.

We met the front group as we got the peak and they were on their way down. Aleshia and Karen decided to hang back. At the top we met Krai with his buddies too. Had a short stop to eat and pictures and then set off down towards East Bernardino. There is a register, but no peak marker. The second peak is about a mile away. Little bit of elevation gain. Nice views from the top. Again there was a register, but no peak marker. Quick stop and then on our way to Anderson. This is where things started to go wrong. The trail splits into 2 in the shadow of Anderson peak. We assumed incorrectly that the trail going high was the correct trail as we thought we were supposed to go to the peak. Who would have thought that Anderson flat where we are supposed to take in views from the crest is not a peak. Anyway. There was no trail to the peak so we left the trail and climbed up a steep ridge to hit the summit. Found some fabulous views of Gorgonio and Jacinto from the top. We started descending cross country once again. After going for quite some time downhill on fairly treacherous terrain I felt we should have hit the trail. Luckily I got some GPS signal on my phone and we were able to adjust our direction to the left and head towards the trail. Finally found the trail after about 30-40 mins of being completely lost. But were still not out of the woods. After lot of deliberation, checking the map on my phone which was a lifesaver, but still really confusing, and grappling with the trail signs which were no help at all, we decided to start heading back. The hike description in the meetup was a little helpful and we spoke to couple of people on the trail as well. Finally we were on the right track but got to the trailhead only by 6pm about 2 hours after we planned.

The hike had it's nervous moments, but all in all highly enjoyable. It took me back to 20 years ago and hikes in India where there is no proper trail and you are always a little bit lost and not really sure if you will end up where you are going.

Another great day in the mountains!
