Ascent Trip Report Our ascent began at the Elk Garden Parking Lot at 1130hrs on August 5 2013. We started by heading down the Elk Garden Trail (1.5 miles), crossing the street at the end of the trail and continuing along a gravel path for another 1.5 miles descending another 500ft in elevation before turning around at Old County Rd. This is where our ascent of Mt Rogers began. We hiked the 3 miles back up the gravel path and Elk Garden Trail back to the Elk Garden Parking Lot, crossed the street and transferred to the Appalachian Trail. We took the Appalachian Trail for 4.5 miles stopping for an hour in an open bald approximately 4 miles up the trail. Then we took the Mt Rogers Spur (.75 miles) to the summit reaching the beacon just shy of 1930hrs. After spending some time on the summit we began out descent returning to the open bald where we stopped earlier to camp for the night. This 1.25 mile hike took us 50 min giving us a total of 12 miles hiked for the day. In the morning we packed up camp and headed out on the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail traveling 2.5 miles back to the Elk Garden Parking Lot. State Highpoints: 2/50 |
