Ascent of Flat Rock on 2013-08-04
|Date:||Sunday, August 4, 2013|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-North Carolina|
| Elevation:||3880 ft / 1182 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThe elevation of 3880 listed in the Peakbagger database flattens this rock by 200 feet. It should be 4080 according to the contours. My GPS said 4122.
The hike is an easy 0.65-mile loop from the Blue RIdge Parkway's Flat Rock overlook, guided by outdated signs identifying various trees, some of them long gone. The view up top is timeless. In the valley before you lies the oldest golf course in North Carolina, the Linville course that opened in 1895 and was redesigned by the acclaimed Donald Ross in 1924. The horizon is a panorama of Avery County's highest peaks. From left to right: Big Bald, Spear Tops, Little Yellow, Grassy Ridge, Big Yellow, Little Hump, Hump, Sugar, Hanging Rock, and Grandfather. Roan High Knob is visible beyond Grassy Ridge.
