Ascent Trip ReportI came in a different approach than previous reports. I started at the end of FR020, Salmon River Mtn Road. I stopped by Lake Mtn before this one as well. I came to the Iron Lake campground and found the trailhead to Hat Creek Lakes near the campground beginning. An old A-Frame camp hut is at the trailhead as well. I wouldn't really recommend the entire way I tackled this peak, but here is my advice. -- Start on the Hat Creek Lakes trail and follow this about 1 mile or so until the trail crests the ridge and starts winding down the hill towards the basin. Before going down the ridge, head right (westerly) up the slight slope towards Taylor peak. Follow the ridgeline to Taylor peak. On part of the ridge, you will actually come across a fairly well used trail from the old lookout which will aid you to the top. This is the way I returned from the summit. The other option, the one I used for ascent, is to follow the trail (a good trail as well) to the Hat Creek Lakes. From there if you make your way westerly between the lakes, there is a trail that goes up Taylor Mtn from there. I actually chose to follow the saddle just north of the lakes, and the ridge to the top. This was steep, and I had a problem sidehilling the loose talus above the lakes, on the small sub-peak northeast of Taylor. The ridgeline is definitely the better choice, and willn cut 1.5 miles off your trip. Saw one deer on hike. |
