Ascent Trip Report

Description: 5,457' Ryan Mountain gives a clear view of JTNP and the Mojave and Colorado deserts. You can even see Mt. San Jacinto and San Gorgonio on a good day. It is absolutely amazing to see the forests of Joshuas and awesome rocks our Creator has made in His time on the valley floor. This trail follows up a rocky path, and at some times you may have to make your own trail (though the main route is obvious). You go by many summits you expect to be the top, but don't give up! You really can't see the top of the mountain until your actually there.

The Trail: From the trailhead, You pass some large rocks, yuccas, joshuas and pinyons. You begin a steep upgrade on the trail, and at some times the trail looks like stairs. This is on of the most challenging parts of the hike. PACE YOURSELF! DRINK WATER EVERY 8-15 MIN! I made the terrible mistake of NOT drinking or bringing enough water, and I had to wait to continue as the rest of my party kept going. Bring at least 64 oz of water per person. (Juice containers work) Keep going on the trail and watch out for the steep sides of the mountain and the rugged valley below. After about 45 min from the trailhead, you must cross over black boulders in the trail. Proceed slowly and take caution! There soon appears on you left a small clearing with a few small trees. By this point you are over 70% done. Keep walking as you soon begin to reach the roof of the mountain and hike on it for about 20 min. You soon see the top with a sign saying: RYAN MOUNTAIN 5,457'. Marvel at the awesome creation the Lord has made. Gaze over 1000' below at the thousands of Joshuas and amazing rocks on the valley floor. It is a bit chilly at the summit about 5-10 degrees cooler and windy, so bring a light jacket. Turn around the same way. Riverside County Hiked 5-19-11
