Ascent Trip Report

Buffalo Hump is a very prominent peak in the middle of nowhere Idaho. I approached Buffalo Hump from Grangeville and Hwy 14. I don't have the mileage, but follow your map out past the turn off fro Newsome and then take FR 233 on the rigt that heads south to Orogrande. Continue past the settlement of Orogrande to the Orogrande Summit where there is a campground and the road forks. Take the left fork towards Hump Lake. Good road up to here and for the next mile. The road turns to 4WD after the first bridge. The sign at the summit says it is 6 miles to Hump Lake. 5 of those miles are mostly bone jarring 4WD where high clearance is required. I drove about 3.5 miles on this 4WD portion of the road and found a wide spot and parked. I was close enough to hike the rest.

The hike from where I parked is up the road. There are some 4WD step ledges that one would have to climb above where I parked. Easy hiking up the road. At the top of the road there are some magnificent cabins on the south end of Hump Lake. They are private property, so I bypassed them and followed the road to its end just past the cabins. It is cross country from the end of the road to the summit. It is easy hiking that is mostly open clear grassy slopes. There are some rocky areas that are easily avoided. I headed for the south ridge and followed the ridgeline towards the summit. As I approached the rocky summit area from the ridge I found a trail in the talus. This trail goes right up to the summit. Great views in a beautiful area. Awful road....

Two wheel drive can get to the first bridge. There is traffic on the road, don't block it. On my way out a LARGE almost new dump truck was coming in. It was loaded with supplies and may have been heading for Hump Lake. Fortunately, there was a wide spot in the road where we passed one another.
