Ascent Trip ReportI was on my way to check out a KCHP when in the City of Frankfort I noticed some wonderful sedimentary cliffs along the Kentucky River. One steep face caught my attention and I noticed it was in a City Park. The river cuts the limestone mountain range in half with a USGS elevation at the Kentucky River given at 468. This small city of Frankfort Park is dedicated to the fort encampment of Civil War soldiers here on this strategic bluff adjacent to the Kentucky River supporting the City of Frankfort during the war. The City has made the entire Fort Hill into a public park. There are two candidate HPs and I marked the one with an apparent BM but the second could easily by the HP and fortunately the trails in the park lead to both. Saw lots of deer in the woods.
I parked my car at the parking spot at the end of the paved road and then hiked it in reverse finding the old historic military trail to the bottom and then set that as my TH and then hiked it back up and recorded it in reverse. It is crazy discovering that this old historic supply trail, now a hiking trail, dumps right into the paved courtyard of the State of KY legislature building. I hiked quickly up the the moutain in 8 minutes and then slowed down to enjoy the next 20 minutes exploring the overlooks, historic plaques and then meandering to the back to see if the other peak was higher. No clue? Perhaps the same? Either way, the trails afford you the opportunity to bag both and thus, claim this historic civil war site as peakbagged and get a little bit of excercise in the process. I wish I had time to go in the historic tavern.
