Ascent Trip ReportFound out about the new Saranac Lake 6er challenge a few weeks ago and thought it was a perfect way to get a few more peaks in on my quest to 52 this year. Dave met me at my house in the morning and we loaded up the truck with our camping gear and the dog and hit the road. We ended up hitting the trail at right around 11. The trail was pretty easy-going for quite a while and crossed some railroad tracks. While some people prefer not to have any contact with people or the outside world while they hike, I would have loved to see and hear the train go by.
At one point, maybe half to two-thirds of the way to the top, there's a steep incline over a rock face with many roots going across it. The trail appears to go to the right at the base of this but after maybe 100 yards it just ends. From here we bushwhacked up a little rock face and worked our way up and back towards the side of the mountain we were ascending until we crossed the trail again. Eventually we came to a small clearing with no views to speak of, but clearly the "summit". We continued to follow the trail for another 0.4 miles to reach the true summit and made our way back to the clearing to eat.
The trail was dry and mostly maintained. Unfortunately trail markers were sparse and inconsistent in type and color the higher up you go. This was my 1st peak of the new Saranac Lake 6er Challenge and 19th peak of the year towards a goal of 52.
