Ascent Trip Report

Perfect pre-climb photo op at a roadside pullout about 1 mile NW of the junction of US93 and Hwy 473. The gravel road from Hwy 473 to the trailhead has long switchbacks, but is graded well, and all cars can make it. There are no facilities or trash cans at the trailhead, so come prepared. Grocery bags and gallon freezer bags to pack it out.

The trail is in good shape and you're climbing just about all the way, gaining 3900 feet in 4 miles. A half mile up, look for a cool shot of the Boulder Point Lookout on the ridge to the south. Only one snowfield across the trail near the top. Maybe 60 feet across and nearly level, so just walked across. Great views from the summit, especially toward the northwest and El Capitan.

Chance meeting with Greg Slayden at the summit. He hiked up from the Baker Lake trailhead. Separately, we did the same thing upon reaching the broad saddle 1/2 mile east of the summit: stayed on the ridgetop. It wasn't bad, but it had some wasted elevation gain, and one top cliffed out, requiring a little backtrack and downstepping left. It wasn't much trouble, but on our return, we both agreed on a 150-200 foot downhill to the south after leaving the summit, then walking level across the large talus made an easier route.

I won't post a GPS track, since I'm sure Greg will with his report. At the top, we followed the same track along (going up) and below (going down) the east ridge. Mine followed the Trapper Peak Trail, which is accurately depicted on Topos and easy to follow, whereas his will show a lot of off-trail coming up from Baker Lake.
