Ascent Trip Report

There are two trail approaches for this peak. Both trails have signs indicating a 2.5 mile hike, however the lower trailhead probably includes about a 1500' + gain since the trailhead elevation is about 5500'.
Access to this peak off Sutton Creek road #619 (well marked) just north of Peck Gulch on Hwy 37 along Lake Koocanusa. Follow Sutton Creek Road and then turn right on FR7993. Stay on 7993. I didn't write down mile posts but I think it was shortly after MP 8 that the bottom trailhead starts for McGuire Lookout. I would recommend staying on this road and going further. You will go through some logging slash areas, at this time you are going around the south side of McGuire. Follow this road until you come to the #494 and take a left on #494. Follow this up to the well marked trailhead and parking area just a few miles up. Trail heads to the west. A few hundred yards into the trail, the trail branches. We took the trail to the right, but I think both trails meet up again later anyways, so either trail would work, however the lower (left) trail may not be quite as steep of terrain.
The hike is a fairly easy hike with some minor up and down grades, but mostly a modest ascent in elevation. At the top is a small lookout, at the time we were there a young couple was in the lookout, having rented it for the weekend. Faint views of Glacier park, Snowshoe peak and more peaks into Canada can be viewed from here.
