Ascent Trip Report

From Co. 17 west and south of Antonito and Platero, we took 117 south across the tracks of the Cumbres and Toltec rr. It becomes FR 87 when you cross the state line into New Mexico. We reached an intersection in less than a mile and after a wrong turn down the left fork backtracked and went down the right fork (FR 686). This rough road wound around for several miles over rocks and deep mud puddles until our GPS placed us at slightly over a half mile from the GPS coordinates where we parked. A relatively easy uphill bushwhack got us to a ridge line that winds around to the hp. From our parking spot we could hardly see anything that looked like a peak, but once on the ridge line we hit a meadow about 0.1 mi. from the peak. The bare hp offers impressive views north and west which we took advantage of for photo opportunities.

Our GPS put us at roughly 1.7 mi. from peak 10977 and the route appeared to be largely open meadows--didn't look too difficult, so we took off downhill across the meadows, around an intervening unranked knob, over a barbed wire fence to valley with small streams at the base of 10977. Again a straightforward bushwhack with fewer downed trees than many I've done, and easy to cut the steepness by creating switchbacks with a bit of a zigzag pattern. Again, nice views on top. Followed GPS headings on the way back. A bit of elevation gain back to our parking spot.

This relatively isolated area doesn't feature any of the dramatic steep high peaks of the Sangre de Cristos, but the majestic high meadows and expansive views also have a dramatic beauty. Well worth a visit!
