Ascent Trip ReportFrom Peak Mountain to the west, it's a short 15 min stroll (with a little ele loss) over to North Peak, AKA Montara Mountain. You'll approach Montara from its west on the North Peak Access Road. At one point you'll see the radio towers ahead of you and to their left some rusted barbed wire on a short 10ft ledge that looks tempting to head through. Save yourself the trouble. Follow the road for another 60 seconds around the south side of the radio tower area, and you'll see a nice, clear little route to the actual summit on the other side. Otherwise, if you decide to cut through like I did, you'll have to deal with some shrubs and pokey things.
Views from Montara were disappointing. Moreover, the gate heading over to South Peak and Montara Knob was closed with ominous signs posted about fire danger, tresspassing, etc. Bummer. I dawdled around the gate for a few minutes debating on whether to jump it. Because the trail past the gate looked to be just more of the same, I decided against it. Heading back early to hang out at the beach sounded more appealing. |
