Ascent Trip Report

Karen drove me from Greenville Bay by our boat and I took a bearing from the lake and selected routes that would access both apparent HPs. After investigating the shoreline, I jumped ship to the rocks and scrambled up the side of the shore. There are some meandering and steep highly vegetated areas with lots of blow down where I began. I tied some flags to make the escape faster as we had family to pick up at a set time.

Karen anchored offshore and enjoyed a nice swim. I had the island to myself. There are some huge trees on the island that look as if there was limited harvesting unlike most of Maine. Areas of pine and spruce and thick beech and hardwood areas. The terrain was surprisingly hilly with several false knobs here and there and I climbed each to pick my bearings. Near the top were some steep ledges that were a 20 foot scramble or you could go around. The peak has no views but is semi-bald rock covered in lichen and moss like so many Maine peaks.

I actually spotted a rough grouse and was able to sneak up on him before he bolted instead of getting that adreline rush when one takes off under foot unexpectedly. Interesting terrain for a small insland in a beautiful lake. There used to be a geocashe on the island and one time we searched for and never found.

Returning to the boat I was pleased that the bushwhack was pleasant not filled with biting flies like Farm Island and had much better terrain to explore. Still, I was sweaty and nothing like taking a dip in Moosehead Lake with its cold refreshing waters as a reward for the succesful bushwhack practice.
