Ascent Trip Report

The park entry fee is 8$ per car. I thought we would be able to start at the YONA (Youth Overnight Area), but the road was blocked off about a mile before there. So instead of going up Cougar Ridge Trail, we went up Bessie Canyon Trail, and then switched to Toyon Ridge Trail. The trail is well maintained, but a little steep in areas. It was steep enough to warrant hold my 5 year old son's hand, but not too bad. He was a trooper, and other than frequent water we made pretty good time. Within a mile of the top you come to a gate, but it's open to hikers. Right after this point, I was uncertain if the knoll to our right was "Eagle Peak". There was no trail, but we walked to the top and took a few pictures just in case. We continued on the trail to an exposed hill top which had the sign for Eagle Peak. We then continued down the other side on Cougar Ridge Trail. This took us to YONA, and then we walked the road back to the parking area.
