Ascent Trip Report

This was my 5th hike of the day. 4th CHP and one non CHP. I stretched each hike into more of hike by selecting strategic THs downhill avoiding "drive-up" highpointing which I disdain. I was able to squeeze out nearly 7 miles of hiking (much of which was along public R/W) with some buchwhacking mixed in and a total gain of 517 feet for the day. For this hike I was able to get 2.8 miles and 236 feet of gain by selecting my TH down at the creek-wetland crossing the CR at elevation 150.

The hike along CR 276 was monotinous and hot. The driveway where it says "Harden Hill" was a welcome sight. I had in hand the papers and compass and HPer clothing. I did not want to drive up and take the Hardens by surprise. It was 5 PM Sunday and I was sweaty but wore a nice shirt. I knocked on the door and Mr. Butch Harden jumped up and came out to greet me.

I sheepishly asked if he was Mr. Harden and apologized for bothering him on a Sunday afternoon. He was happy to chat and as all have reported more than welcoming. He offered me water. We chatted about the others before me and he said "your club of people are all very nice people" He has had only good experiences with HPers and we need to keep it that way. He gave me the the typical disclaimer about the HP is on his neighbors property but he did not seem to mind. The property is a large pine plantation now overgrown with understory growth.

Mr. Harden showed me around his yard and was happy to have a visitor. We chatted about my lodge in Maine and his kids. I then bushwhacked back to the HP eating many spider webs and being tripped by grape vines and stuck by some briers. The HP is uneventful itself but the journey up the Harden driveway and good ol' southern hospitality by Mr. Harden made this a pleasant journey. He should be recognized as one of those very amenable gatekeepers to our CHPs. He allowed me to take a photo of him for my records to document the trip. Then back all the way down to my car miles away.

Using the Ben L. approach with papers and compass in hand and being very polite and appreciative was perfect. Thanks to all prior to me that made it a pleasant experience for him to have periodic HPing guest come by!
