Ascent Trip ReportThis is a strange area. Another Mackle Brothers fiasco apparently. For those of you not familiar with the developer, the Mackle Brothers and General Development Corp developed or tried to develop huge tracks of FL land back in the 60 and 70s and some were successful but many were not. Marco Island is one of the very successful areas now an island with expensive homes and nearly totally built out. Deltona in Volusia County struggeled when the company went bankrupt but has since taken off and has incorporated as its own City with 85,000 residents. There are at least a dozen of these enormous platted communites throughout the state of FL.
They all have a main BLVD called Elkcam BLVD in them which is their last name spelled backwards! This is one of the biggest busts they ever had. You travel down miles a paved 4 land divided BLVD past scores of paved residential roads and not one house! I traveled to the HP by Elkcam and by Orange. Both end in clay unpaved roads. Frankly it is creepy back there. Miles and miles of platted undevolped lots and weeds overtaking the miles of paved and unpaved roads with no inhabitants. Like most of their developments there is a Deltona Blvd. It is mostly paved.
I parked at the terminus of Elkham and they attempted to find the jeep trails shown on the USGS and aerial to see if I could find the bottom of ten mile creek. I abandoned that TH when I got tierd of eating spider webs on my bushwhack and being chased by some huge stinging wasp like creature and biting flies. This was a hot and miserable day. I found the 250 contour and started. It was too thick to enjoy bushwhacking down to the creek. I gave up and made it a simple hike to the HP and abandoned my idea of hiking up from the bottom of ten mile creek.
The other 2 candidate HPs are acquired when bagging Calhoun County CHP. Any climbing stats are included with that trip. Then off to the next HP |
