Ascent Trip Report

A popular 5.3-mile round trip on one of Moses Cone's century-old carriage trails, leading to a 40-foot lookout tower. Easy walking on a gravel road through national-park land. Mostly wooded hike with a picturesque meadow along the way and a rewarding view of Blowing Rock at the 2-mile mark.

Park at the Cone Manor House/Craft Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock.

There is no benchmark on the summit, contrary to what the topo may suggest. BM Cone is supposed to be along the carriage road 0.3 miles north of the Cone cemetery, though I have never found it. Near the start of the hike, there is a BM in a concrete post placed by the state highway commission. It's about 200 yards from the Parkway underpass and about 5 feet inside the barbed-wire fence.
