Ascent Trip ReportAs a result of this visit I have found that progress (????) has increased the number of Candidate High Point Areas for Marshall County from one to a minimum of two (perhaps there are more), I went to both. This area has had some major work lately ..... the 1602 foot spot elevation is long-gone and therefore so is the County HP.
This whole area has been industrialized with the installation of 5 water ponds "Hieronimus Freshwater Impoundments" (complete with pumps/lines/access roads) for the purpose of supplying water to the local "Fracking Operations" going on in the area.
Pond #5 has been installed right on the summit of Tunnel Hill Northeast, the summit has been lowered by at least 20-30 feet. The remaining natural high-ground, north of the pond is inside the 1580 foot contour but it is not "the" HP.
The present HP is 200 yards to the northeast (at top end of a tall grass open area inside the 1580 foot contour), I had to hop over a fence on the way here .... next to a few tall trees with a Hikers Sign and orange blazes, my chosen HP spot was at 39.82310,-80.52485.
Richard Oestreicher ended up at this same spot, see his TR for more information. Also the Bing Maps gives the update satellite view of this whole installation.
I met up with 2 workers on the summit eating their lunch, they had no problem with me being there, were not aware of Highpointing, the gate at the bottom is closed during the off hours ... "Watch out for ticks, I got bitten last week."
NB ***** This HP is now 1580+ feet in elevation, the same as Culley Hill (see its TR). Marshall County has now at least 2 Candidate High Point Areas that need to be visited
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE HP.
From the village of Cameron at the small bridge in town, it is 1.6 miles south on #250 to a left (east) turn on Hupp Ridge Road, .6 miles east pass Tunnel Hill Road on the left and in another .2 miles arrive at the crest of the road. On the right is an abandoned house and on the left a gated dirt road, the entrance to the "Hieronimus Freshwater Impoundments". The road heads northerly .5 miles to the summit.
The gate was open so I drove to the top, as noted above it is apparently closed on its off hours.
