Ascent Trip ReportSuper ridiculously windy day. Josef and I first went up to Gunsight Pass. The 60mph+ wind coming over the top of the pass was so strong that if you stood straight up, it would push you over. Not my cup of tea. Josef, the beast he is, toughed it out and scrambled on all fours up the east ridge towards West Gunsight/Dome. (He ended up successfully clinging his way all the way to W Gunsight as well as Kings Peak.) I hung around for an hour watching him then descended back north down from Gunsight Pass to try the northern ridge since the wind was coming up from the south.
The northern ridge to W Gunsight was much more fun than the typical western traverse from Gunsight Pass. Mixed climbing with occasional deep mounds of snow. (Once I postholed up to my chest, freaking me out a bit, and taking me a good 10min to dig myself out of.) From the northern side, I made it up to 12.2k ft, less than half a mile from the summit, before the wind greeted me again and began pelting me with small pebbles and large grains of sand at 40+ mph. Both unpleasant and painful.
The next day, our day to return home as fate would have it, there was zero wind. For me the summit just wasn't meant to be. |
