Ascent Trip ReportLeft 7:30 AM in fog and post drizzle conditions. 61 F Climb was wet and muddy but the winding trail through the forest was quite attractive. The trail winds along the cliff edge and there are very nice views and overlooks although we could not see to the bottom through the fog. You can use the blue blaze bipass trail that is next to the rock formations and stay fairly level (there are still a number of ravines that you cross giving extra gain) but the alternate blue blaze path along the rocks will take you up and down quite a bit.
We made a little side trip to go check out the Camel Hump and right when I made the top a baby fawn still spotted bolted out from under my feet 2 feet away appratnely the mother leaving her hidden on the top of the feature for protection. After I stopped my heart from racing from the startling animal retreat we rejoined the cliff edge and hiked down to Preston Notch.
Trip started at 7:30 AM at the TH at parking lot for Mattabesset Trail and climbs steeply to first peak with some up and down gains. We completed this peak, played and took many photos on the cliff overlooks, explored Camel Hump, made it Higby Mountain to the north summitted at 8:45 and headed back the same way down and were back by 9:50 AM. Thus, the entire trip was over 1000 feet of gain and 4 miles and took about 2 hours 20 minutes with wet conditions and lots of photos. The views of Higby south were more interesting than Higby.
