Ascent Trip ReportUp early and got to the exit off I-70 at 6:30. Took Stevens Gulch road up in my rental Ford Escape, and just had to take it easy. Made it to the avalanche debris site about 1/2 mile from the actual trailhead. Most of the hike was on snow, and it was very windy. Heading up Greys, everyone just booted up the snow, instead of taking the switchbacks. The wind was howling through the col between Torrey's and Grey's. The last quarter mile of the climb was right in the teeth of 40 mile an hour winds. A 30 second video on top was enough to frost nip my fingers. Since I couldn't get my ice-axe in my luggage due to size constraints, I was not comfortable doing the traverse to Torrey's. Hiking out, the warm temps turned the upper slopes into perfect plunge stepping snow, but the lower slopes were sloppy slush.
