Ascent Trip ReportDaniel and I still had time and energy to bag one more peak. Karen, Sarah and the puppy took a nap. Still parked at the AMC parking to climb Frissell, we headed east this time down a wide jeep trail to an AMC camp and creek and followed the trail till hit intersected AT traffic. Turned right and headed up the Bear Mountain trail. We wanted the Bee Line trail but could not fine it.
there is a nice steep area that goes to some minor class 3 that Danny I raced up. From the bottom of the trail (AT section) to the top we made it in ten minutes and was a good 400 foot workout. At the top a bunch of people sat on the rock tower resting and viewing the small mountains and reservoir to the east. Better views here than on Round Mountain and Frissell.
The plaque appeared to indicate that they thought Bear Mountain was the highest point in CT but we now know that is not true is is on the southern shoulder of Frissell but at the time of the plaque it was probably thought to be actually on the top of a mountain not on the shoulder of mountain in Massachutes. I presume thus, it is the second highest in CT but the highest peak contained in CT.
We did the 2.4 miles up and back under an hour. |
