Ascent Trip ReportWe parked at the lot on the right and walked up to the historic CT-MASS state marker and found the AMC trail blazed red heading west. The trail was a gushing river of water as it had rained all week and we ankle deep water more much of it. This was the first leg of the journey bordering two states on the way to Round Mountain. Winding in and out of CT and MASS there is trail to the left that swings you West to SW back into CT and over to Round Mountain. The steep section of the hike ascends some nice rock that is not quite a scramble for most people (although I saw a lot of people using there hands) but it is steep enough and the steps high enough our 5 month old puppy Weimeraner "Willie" was not able to make many of the moves and we had to assist him by pushing his rump or carrying him up and over rocks. At 45 pounds that got to be intersting. Other more mature dogs had little problem with their footing.
We met up with an AMC guide with his shirt and patch and a friend and their 2 Jack Russels but he was having trouble finding the trail to Frissell as their are a number of highly used routes on the top of Round Mtn. He insisted we were in Massachutes still and corrected him with my far more detailed database of peakbagger maps that only a peakbagger would bring and ensured him we were in CT.
Some nice views from Round Mtn and exposed rock. Dipping NE down the saddle shown on the USGS the climb up Frissell takes you back into MASS and is a little easier on the puppy to "scramble" up and you can wind your way to the CT state HP if you keep on the trails but it is on the south shoulder of Frissel and adequatley marked and was well used the day we were there. |
