Ascent Trip ReportRaven Rocks is a ledge overhanging US221 that offers a great westward view of Grandfather Mountain.
Roundtrip hike is 0.4 miles from the Sandy Flats picnic area on US221 south of Blowing Rock. The unmarked trailhead is at the westernmost parking place. The trail descends through one of Moses Cone's old apple orchards (don't eat the apples unless you like arsenic) and then climbs a little over 100 feet. Near the top you walk under an overhanging boulder that rock climbers use for practice.
In this area, Raven Rock is a common (and sometimes misplaced) name. It's also the name shown on the quad for Grandfather Mtn's MacRae Peak, as well a large outcropping east of the parkway near milepost 290. I've seen the Parkway sign for Raven Rocks Overlook posted at three different locations, most recently near milepost 291 where you view Flat Top Mtn.
