Ascent Trip ReportThis is a continuation of the hike to Little Rock Knob. It adds 1.4 miles round trip, so the total from Hughes Gap is 5.6 miles and took me 4 hours, including stops.
The so-called West Peak is an unremarkable summit except that it is ranked among TN 4.5ers. Actually, I think the HP is on the NC side, based on the placement of a surveyors post and a sign for NC Game Lands. But the opposite is true for Little Rock Knob, so it all evens out.
From Little Rock Knob, follow the AT southbound and enjoy a series of clifftop views to the north. The AT then descends steeply (dropping 150 feet in 200 yards on rocks that can be treacherous when wet). Cross a gap at the 4400 contour and then follow the AT till it crests. The HP is about 100 yards off the trail.
