Ascent Trip ReportAfter talking to Cape Hatteras National Seashore Park Rangers, I believe that the three eastern candidates can be eliminated because they are constantly being rebuilt by road workers trying to keep the beaches from overtaking highway 12. On the farthest eastern candidate there is pieces of blacktop from the last highway clumped into the dunes, further proof that these dunes are constantly being reshaped by man. The candidates in the woods are in a more natural, although sadly more itchy, setting.
Also, if you are doing these points, the Ocracoke Park Service Campground was an excellent place to sleep. But a word of warning, make sure you have extra long tent stakes because you're camping in dunes and the wind will rip out your tent if you have normal sized stakes.
