Ascent Trip ReportMileage to Big Tom is either 1.0 (per my GPS) or 1.4 (per state park maps and signs) from the Mount Mitchell picnic area. Details in my trip report for Cattail Peak. Before this peak was named for legendary hunter Big Tom Wilson, it was known as Hairy Bear. Wilson killed over 100 bears in his lifetime and was best known for discovering the body of Dr. Elias Mitchell, who suffered a fatal fall during a survey trip on Mount Mitchell.
