Ascent Trip Report

This was by far my most memorable hiking trip to date. Started up the trail to the junction and there was snow at about 3000' I'm guessing. By the time I reached the waterfall, I had to throw on the micro spikes. It was some sloppy going the rest of the way from here. Met up with two guys just before the junction to Wright. We each had passed multiple people that said Wright was not doable without snowshoes. We wanted to prove those people wrong. The going wasn't bad up most of Wright. A couple people had tried already (unsuccessfully). When they decided they couldn't go on any longer, we kept going. Most people stopped just before the bare rocks above the treeline. You can see the summit from here and we wanted it. We kept trekking through, following the cairns and occasional paint blazes. There was some deep snow where it was able to drift, but was able to make it through. We did make it to the top, and were the first to do so today. Snapped a couple of pictures, ate some lunch and then headed down. One of the two guys I met on the trail wanted to continue on and do Algonquin like I did, but his friend turned around for the day once we got to the junction. Slow going to the top of Algonquin without any snowshoes. Getting to the summit we thought about getting Iroquois, but it was getting later than we wanted with at least 3 hours more if we did the rest of that hike. Turning back down towards the Loj it was very sloppy, rotten, wet snow. Very tough going. It took us an hour to get back down to the junction of Wright, the same amount of time it took to climb from there to Algonquin. It was a slippery, slow pace until just after the waterfall, when it turned to just mud. The trail was much drier down below. It felt like summer down there compared to the winter conditions on top of the mountains we just climbed. Great hike, great experience. Not sure I would like to do that type of hiking again though, it was rough.
