Ascent Trip ReportAnyone interested in hiking to Doe Mountain should ask about access at the Johnson County Welcome Center and Museum (email@example.com, 423-727-5800) on US421 in Mountain City TN.
The top of the mountain is public property, but the route described on the Johnson County Trails website is no longer open to the public. Those directions involved parking in a private neighborhood, and construction has closed the old access road. A property owner who gave me permission to hike up said that there are plans for a new trail from the Welcome Center. A new trail would be good--the old track I followed is in rough shape.
Doe Mountain is a long narrow ridge that runs SW from Mountain City between Highways 67 and 167. The highest point on the entire ridge (3889) is an old fire tower site further SW that is also difficult to access because of private roads. The subpeak closest to town (3326) has an abandoned satellite dish farm that used to feed the local cable TV. There is supposed to be a BM there, but I was not aware of it and didn't look for it. I walked over a half-mile along the ridgeline, crossing three small 3400-foot contours. It's hard to say which is the highest.
There is an old service road and 4-wheeler track that runs along the ridgeline. Long-range views were limited to a couple of cuts for the power lines and a ledge just beyond the third 3400 contour. Along the ridge, I was treated to occasional orange-blooming flame azalea and serenaded by moos, barks, and cock-a-doodle-doos from way down in the valleys on both sides.
