Ascent Trip Report

Wanting to get more excercise on way back from Putnam County HP. I researched a national forest highpoint. This Ocala has at least 3 areas that exceed the 150 contour all with a small rising hill. I could not determine which is the highest as it may be a foot or two differnce. This particular one, however, is the spot where the historic USGS maps indicate that there was an observation tower and it appears to be where at one time the highest area was located.

It is easy to get there. Leave SR 19 and go around the north side of Lake Kerr on CR 316 and find SFR 98. The maps say 98 but the sign on the road actually says 9? It is marked as allowing 4 wheel drive recreation vehicles. We saw no prohibitions against, SUVs, hikers, dogs, etc. The TH would be the jeep trail about 0.4 tenths of a mile down the road that veers off to the SE and parallels the SFR.

The observation tower as far as I could tell was gone and the area is covered in raindeer moss and tiny sand pines. Not much to see but at least antoher 2 miles of hiking for the day in the woods.
