Ascent Trip ReportDAY #20 ----- ROCK STARS -----
Heavily overcast and a lousy day for hiking...... completely fogged in at the top of Clingmans Dome.
From the Derrick Knob shelter, it is a huge, tough climb over 4 major summits before arriving at Clingmans Dome, moderate trail with a few short steep sections. Marcus was his usual self on the ascents - strong, lots of granny stops. At the end of the day, Marcus told me that he was tired.
At Double Spring shelter, after going over 3 major summits, we stopped in for a snack break. A bunch of good looking women, dressed in really SEXY TIGHTS and not like a regular hiker, offered Marcus bagels to eat ! ! ! realizing their "understandable" oversight ! ! ! one of them said to me " OHHH, do you want some too ?? "
At Clingmams dome, we left our packs behind and walked the ramp to the tower, even though it was fogged in. Back down , Marcus went down to the parking area, to get water...... I didn't have the energy to follow. Ken, from ealier meetings, arrived and joined us for a late lunch. A guy from Ohio came up to us, asking questions as to what were we all about - It was evident he didn't know anything about thru hiking. When he found out that we were hiking GA/VT, he was very very impressed and really excited, shouting to his nearby wife, " Hey dear, come over here & TAKE A PICTURE of me with these guys? They walked all the way from Georgia. " We felt like ROCK STARS.
The Mount Collins shelter was full with 12 people, 2 guys showing up at 20h00. Some guys built a camp fire and drank beer into the late evening ! ! ! This is not abnormal for shelters that are located close to road access (in this case 4 1/2 miles). They tend to attract weekend party goers (its Saturday today).
This shelter is also fenced in. "THE SMOKIES ARE LIKE A ZOO, ONLY ITS NOT THE ANIMALS THAT ARE CAGED IN. AND LIKE THE ANIMALS YOU CAN SHIT ANYWHERE. "
We went over 7 major summits today...... climbing about 4000 feet. Our last night together, tomorrow Marcus will sadly leave the AT. He has to report to his summer job.
