Ascent Trip ReportOn the way to GREENLEE (Huntington CoHP) I decided to take in LITTLE FLAT since its on the way ..... all as per this one only TR.
East of State College, at the intersection of the new US #322 and the Business (old) #322 we drove east on 322 for .6 miles to a left turn onto Bears Meadow Road, Mountain View Country Club on corner. We zeroed our odo.
0.00M ... left #322 southbound on Bears Meadow Road
0.75M ... pass by Tussey Mountain Ski Resort
1.43M ... turned right southwest onto the winding Laurel Run Road
4.04M ... passed LITTLE FLAT Fire Tower Road on the left, see below for details of this climb.
5.10M ... turned left (still southwest) onto Bear Gap Road (unsigned). Post on corner reads "Thick Head Wild Area Boundary"
6.65M ... arrived at gated Gettis Ridge Road on left, parked this is the TH for GREENLEE.
GREENLEE MOUNTAIN .... .75 miles, 40 minutes RT including all of the bushwacking
I walked Gettis Ridge Road southeast about 500 yards to a long height-of-land, at large pine tree I started my bushwack. I can see why they call this mountain Big Flat, nothing obvious here. The vegetation/underbrush/conditions are similar to that described in the Broad Mountain TR, luckily this one is a much smaller field to contend-with.
I fought my way to the north finally choosing a spot at 60 yards from the road, GPS 40.72203,-77.78506.
LITTLE FLAT .... 1.2 miles, 30 minutes RT.
From Laurel Run Road we drove east on Fire Tower Raod for .56 miles to a locked gate, signed "American Tower". This was my TH.
I walked the remainder of the Fire Tower Road .5 miles to the summit with the abandoned Fire Tower amid a beautiful grove of huge pines with a park like floor, no views. A small log cabin and a tall Communication Tower are near-by. My GPS at the Tower read 40.75207,-77.75512.
I walked the MST Trail south on the flat ridge for a few hundred yards looking for higher ground, nothing to be found.
Both of these peaks are in a popular State Forest with maintained trails all over the place, a lot of people were out today !!!!! but not in the dense stuff like some stupid people.
